The Island Tilos

One of the most isolated and most peaceful Dodecanese Islands is undoubtedly the island of Tilos between Nisyros and Halki. On the 63 square mile island  live only about 500 people (from farming and agriculture) - many of the inhabitants have emigrated during  the Italian occupation in the last century. Tourism is on Tilos not such a big role, although offers the relaxed and rocky island some very nice sand and gravel beaches (Eristos Beach) and the necessary infrastructure.
Tilos
is known for a rare breed of dwarf elephants that lived about 10,000 years ago. Skeletal remains in a cave on the island (about 3.5 kilometers from the port) indicated. It is believed that Tilos formed millions of years ago, a land bridge between the Cyclades islands and Asia Minor. When Tilos separated them, the elephants had to get used to the poor conditions and developed in this way might this race of dwarf elephants.
Tilos
was  52 BC Roman, in 1310 occupied the island of St. John and after several attacks Tilos was conquered by the Turks, who in 1912 were "replaced" by the Italians. In 1948 the island was united with Greece.
